Chapter Two: Disaster Roommates
One day after work, before Abrielle was fully moved into her new home, she had gone around town and put up "roommate wanted" postings, and had already gotten a few calls. So she decided to meet the prospective roommates at the park in an interview-like meeting.
She sat down at a table in the park and waited for the first interviewee to show. After about ten minutes of staring around absently a lanky young man plopped down in the seat across from her.
“’Sup” he asked very informally.
“Hi, there. Dustin, right?”
“Yea. So, I’m just wondering how big your basement is.” He
seemed to stare right through her to whatever was going on behind her.
“Um, well there isn’t a basement. There is an attic of
sorts, it’s a big open room with a small balcony, and that is where your room
would be. You could do whatever you’d like with that space.” She smiled at him
even though she knew she only had his partial attention.
He coughed and finally made eye contact, “Well how big is
the yard? I need a big space where my friends and I can have some ragers.”
Abrielle laughed, “Are you serious?”
He grunted and nodded his head.
“Alright, well then. I have your number and I’ll contact
you.”
Without saying another word, Dustin stood up and traipsed
away.
“Ha wow.” Abrielle laughed to herself. “That went well.”
A few minutes later the next contender showed up looking
very prim and proper. She gracefully sat down and folded her hands on the table
between them.
“Hello Miss. I’m Iva Brin. There are a few things I’d just
like to let you know right away, I do not clean, my skin cannot tolerate the
chemicals.”
“I cannot be around any form of pet due to severe allergies.
Company cannot come over without a 24 hour notice for I may be studying and
would not like to be disrupted.”
“And lastly, I will make all the meals because of my severe
allergies. I hope you like bland food.” She smiled slightly and tilted her head
waiting for a response.
“Um well,” Abrielle reached for her phone, “Oh excuse me
please I need to take this.”
She walked away for a moment and pretended to have a
conversation then returned to where Iva was sitting. “I’m really sorry but I’m
going to have to end the meeting my sister’s car broke down and I need to go
get her. I’ll be in touch.”
Iva got up and walked to the car parked at the park
entrance. As soon as Abrielle saw that she was gone she sighed with relief. A second
later she jumped when someone placed their hand on her shoulder and turned
around to see Kyler standing behind her.
