Chapter Eleven: Oh Baby
That night Abrielle and Kyler didn't get to do all the
talking they wanted to. Abrielle told Jenesis what had happened, but
she also reassured her that she just didn't feel that she was in love with Ryan anymore. She then
apologized to Kyler for not being able to talk like she had promised, and went
to bed. She needed time to think about her feelings for Kyler and she really wasn't feeling well. Multiple
times that night Abrielle found herself in the bathroom, losing everything in
her stomach. Jenesis heard her the third time she rushed to the bathroom and
wondered if she was alright but Abrielle told her not to worry, it was probably
just something she ate.
She went to bed that night with a strange feeling deep in
her stomach.
------
“Abrielle, open the door!” Jenesis stood outside the
bathroom pounding her fist on the door. “I know you’re getting sick again.
That’s it! We’re going to the doctor.”
Abrielle opened the door and meekly said, “Jen, I’m fine. My
stomach has just been weird lately. Maybe it’s taking the break up with Ryan
harder than I am.” She tried to joke but Jenesis stared at her sternly.
“It has been a week, and you’re still getting sick. Go put
your shoes on and get in the car. I’m bringing you to the doctor.”
“Fine.” Abrielle huffed and walked to her room. She hated
the doctor, but maybe something was really wrong with her. With her shoes in
hand she made her way barefoot to Jenesis’s car. Once inside she looked at
Jenesis and quietly said, “Do you think I’m going to be alright?”
“Oh honey!” Jenesis grabbed Abrielle’s hand, “Of course.
You’re going to be just fine.”
They drove to the doctor’s office where Jenesis waited with
Abrielle until a nurse called her name.
“I’ll wait here sweetie. You’ll be fine.” Jenesis smiled as
Abrielle stood up and walked away with the nurse.
------
“I’m WHAT?!” Abrielle yelped.
“It appears that you’re about two months pregnant. I take it
this was not planned?”
Abrielle stared helplessly at the doctor, “No, it wasn't.”
“Well Abrielle, you have many options. There’s adoption,
abortion – ”
“I’m keeping it.” Abrielle cut off the doctor mid-sentence
and surprised even herself when she heard those words out loud.
“That’s wonderful, you’ll need to start taking prenatal
vitamins, and I’m sure you know that you should not drink or smoke.” Abrielle
nodded as her doctor handed her a pamphlet about pregnancy with an ecstatic
woman on the cover who looked like she was ready to pop.
“That pamphlet should cover most questions about things to
avoid and things that will help your pregnancy. Now let’s see, you’ll have to
come in for monthly visits now to make sure everything is going according to
plan. Do you have any questions for me?” Dr. Lynn smiled patiently at Abrielle
but all she did was shake her head. “Well then, they can set you up for your
next appointment at the front desk. Take care of yourself and that little one
inside of you.”
Abrielle walked out of the room and refused to mention a
word to Jenesis until they got home.
------
“Abrielle, please! You’re really starting to freak me out!”
Jenesis said while following Abrielle upstairs. “You haven’t told me a single
thing the doctor said! Are you alright? Are you going to die? What is it?!”
“I’m pregnant,” Abrielle stated matter-of-factly. “I have no
clue how it happened… all I know is I need to tell Ryan… Like now.”
“Holy crap Abri!” Jenesis stared at her for a second or two
and then she started howling with laughter.
“Are you kidding me, Jen? This is so not a laughing matter!”
“You… you were so… serious… thought you… were really sick”
Jenesis managed between spurts of laughter.
“Good to know you’re finding this hilarious. I’ll be in my
room.” Abrielle slammed her bedroom door, pulled out her cellphone, and punched
in the digits of Ryan’s number.
“Yeah?” came Ryan’s short reply
“I have something I need to tell you. I’m sorry I have to do
this over the phone but it’s really important.”
“Is everything alright?” Concern flooded Ryan’s voice
“Ryan, I’m pregnant.” The moments of silence that followed
seemed like an eternity for Abrielle. Then she heard him exhale.
“Oh Abrielle! This is wonderful! We can start a family and
we’ll be so happy together! I know you’ll be a great mother! Please, let’s try
to make things work, just say yes to the marriage. We’ll be so happy.”
“I don’t know Ryan.” She sighed. “This is just too much to
handle right now. I just wanted to let you know that I’m pregnant and I’m
keeping it. I’ll talk to you later.” She hung up before Ryan got a chance to
respond and then heard a small knock on the door. “Come in.” Abrielle was
surprised to see Kyler walk through the door.
“Hey Abri, just wanted to see how everything at the doctors
went.” Kyler studied her face and then added, “Are you alright?”
“It’s creepy how well you can read me Ky, you know that?”
Abrielle smiled as she heard Kyler’s small laugh. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just got
some really interesting news from the doctor today.” Kyler looked at her
quizzically waiting for her to finish. “I’m pregnant, Ky.”
“Oh… wow! That’s, that’s really good Abri! So, how are
things with you and Ryan?”
Abrielle looked down at her shuffling feet. “I don’t know… I
don’t think we’re meant to be.”
Kyler took a step towards her, “I know how that goes,” He
says.
Abrielle looked up at him and Kyler’s eyes stared deep into
hers, holding her gaze, “I-I think I know who I’m meant to be with.” She took a step towards him then, the space
between them was only a few inches now.
“Yeah?” Kyler questioned.
Abrielle just smiled at him, a small smile, but Kyler knew the
meaning behind it. He closed the distance between them and gently held Abrielle
in his arms as he finally got to do what he had been waiting all his life for.
They kissed.
Kyler pulled back a few inches and his eyes searched her
face. “I’ve always loved you Abrielle.” He whispered.
“I know.” Abrielle said. “I love you too.” Kyler wrapped her
up in a hug again, and she sighed. “I don’t know what I’m going to tell Ryan.
He deserves to be in this baby’s life, but he wants us to get back together,
and I don’t want that.”
“Just tell him the truth Abri. He’ll understand.”
“I hope so.”
Kyler tightened his grip slightly before releasing Abrielle,
he took a step back and looked at her with the most sincerity she had ever
seen, “No matter what Abrielle, I am always
going to be here for you, and I promise I will never let anything come between
us. I really do love you!”
“Thank you, Kyler. That really means a lot.”
“Now,” Kyler said making his way towards the door, “I’ll be
downstairs, you have a phone call to make.”
Abrielle watched as the door clicked shut and once again
reached for her cellphone dialing Ryan’s number.
“Abrielle! You’ve called to say yes?” Ryan’s voice on the
other end of the line was bubbling over with excitement.
Abrielle cringed knowing that she was about to tell him the
exact opposite of what he wanted to hear. “Actually Ryan, I just wanted to call
and let you know that I don’t think it is right for us to be together. It was
selfish of me to let our relationship last as long as it did when in my heart I
knew we weren’t right for each other. I’m sorry it is all happening like this,
but I still want you to be a part of this baby’s life, your baby. I hope you
understand.”
“No.” Came Ryan’s one word response.
“Excuse me?” Abrielle said, clearly confused.
“If you can’t see that we should be together, as a family,
then I want nothing to do with you, or that thing inside of you. Don’t call me
ever again, Abrielle.” This time Ryan was the one who hung up before Abrielle
could say anything in response.
Tears immediately started rolling down her cheeks and she
made her way downstairs to where Kyler was patiently waiting for her in the
living room.
When he saw her he was on his feet in seconds and had her in
his arms. “I’m sorry he didn’t understand Abri, I really am. But just remember
what I said. I’m not going anywhere. We’re going to make it through this.
Together.”
“Promise?” Was all that Abrielle could say.
