Chapter Four: New Beginnings
Part One
Yes, life was definitely looking up for Abrielle. Jenesis
had moved in at nine the next morning like they had planned, and truly
“girlified” the upstairs room. Abrielle was getting along great with her, and she
had a feeling that everything would work out in the end.
When she first moved in she had promised Jadrien that as
soon as she had things figured out and everything settled she would invite him
over for dinner. So after work that night she invited him over. She was excited
to show him her new place and introduce him to Jenesis.
Abrielle was frantically running around the small kitchen
trying to get dinner under control when Jenesis walked through the front door.
“Hey there crazy woman.” Jenesis laughed as she watched
Abrielle scramble to find the right ingredients for spaghetti (who knew making
spaghetti was such an extreme task). “Need some help?”
“Ah well… no, I think I have this… oh who am I kidding, yes,
please.”
Jenesis laughed again and made her way over to the kitchen.
She put the pot of water on the stove to boil and then turned to Abrielle, “So
when is this boyfriend of yours coming over?”
“Abrielle looked at the clock on the wall and gasped, “In
like forty-five minutes! Oh my goodness! Look at me! I’m a mess! I –”
Jenesis held up her hand cutting her off and said “Hey. Just
calm yourself ok? Take a deep breath and march your little butt up those
stairs. Get ready. And then take another deep breath.”
“But dinner isn’t ready yet!” Abrielle said glancing at the
clock again.
“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got it covered, ok.” Jenesis
smiled and pointed towards the stairs. “March.”
Abrielle giggled and made her way to the stairs. Halfway up
them she leaned over the railing and looked at Jenesis “Thank you so much.” She
said. “You’re seriously the best roommate ever.” Then she quickly ran up the
rest of the stairs.
Jenesis smiled to herself and turned back to the boiling
water

Abrielle stared at herself in the mirror and wondered when
her life started turning around. Was it after graduation, when she finally got
a steady job? Or was it when she met Jadrien, the boy she had dreamed of being
with most of her time in high school? Or maybe, when she got her new home, got
away from her parents, and found the most amazing roommate anyone could ask
for. Whenever it was, she was just glad that she was finally happy with life.
“I never thought it was possible to be this happy.” She said
out loud smiling at her reflection. Just then the doorbell rang and her smile
widened “Here we go!” she squealed in excitement. She ran out of the bathroom
and down the stairs to where Jenesis was opening the door.
“Why hello there.” Jadrien flashed Jenesis one of his smiles
that made girl’s knees go weak, and then, very casually, turned his gaze toward
Abrielle. “Wow, you look great!”
He smiled again and walked over placing a kiss on her cheek.
Abrielle could have sworn she saw him wink at Jenesis as he passed her, but she
told herself she was just seeing things.
“Well, I’ll just be upstairs if you need anything. Have fun
you two.” Jenesis gave Abrielle a thumbs up and made her way up the stairs.
Abrielle smiled at Jenesis and then focused all of her
attention on Jadrien. “So I hope you’re hungry because there’s lots of
spaghetti.” She smiled at him and grabbed his hand leading him to the small
tabled set up in the middle of the living room. “Have a seat and I’ll get the
food.” She smiled at him again, unable to contain her excitement and grabbed
two plates of spaghetti. She placed one in front of him and sat down.
“This looks great Bri. Thanks for having me over.” He smiled
at her and glanced towards the stairs. “So, your roommate seems nice. How are
you two getting along?”
“Well, we’re doing good. It’s nice to have someone around.”
She moved her spaghetti back and forth across her plate with her fork. Jenesis
wasn’t really what she wanted to be discussing on her dinner date with Jadrien.
“That’s good. So what does she do for a living? She work a
lot? Does she have a guy in her life?”
“Um, well, she works at the spa. And is it really important
whether or not she has a boyfriend?” Are
you freaking kidding me? He seriously wants to discuss her? Maybe Kyler is
right. Maybe people never really change. All of these thoughts were running
through her head and then Jadrien’s voice broke through her mental
conversation.
“Well, you know, I don’t really care if she has a boyfriend.
Like, I’m not wondering because – yeah. I’m just wondering because it would,
you know, suck if she always had a guy over.” For the first time in his life he
seemed to be stumbling over his words.
Abrielle thought to herself, you’d think after all those years of playing girls he’d be more suave
than this. She laughed to herself and glanced at Jadrien who was, once
again, staring at the stairs.
