Ch. 16: Welcome Baby Gray

Chapter Sixteen: Welcome Baby Gray

“Hey Abri, you just about ready?” Kyler called to Abrielle as he sat down on the couch for a movie night.

Both Kyler and Abrielle had settled happily into their roles of husband and wife, but between their short honeymoon, their work, and preparing for the baby, they didn't have much down time. Kyler was happy to finally get a chance to just spend a night relaxing with his wife. If she’d ever get her butt out of the bathroom.

“You are just mister impatient these days!” Abrielle laughed coming out of the bathroom.

She took a seat on the couch next to Kyler and he wrapped his arm around her shoulder. “Yeah, sorry, I’m just excited to spend some down time with you!” He smiled at her and then noticed that something was off. “Hey are you feeling alright?” Kyler was concerned.

“Oh yeah, it’s nothing. My stomach is just being a little weird. But no biggie we can start the movie.” Abrielle smiled assuring Kyler that everything was alright even if she herself didn’t quite believe it.

They made it about half way through the movie when Abrielle grimaced and clutched her stomach. Kyler shot her a worried look and asked again, “Are you sure you’re alright?”

Abrielle laughed but her laugh was mixed with pain. “Um, well, you know? I think the baby is coming!”

So much for their relaxing night.

Kyler jumped off the couch and started freaking out, “Oh my god! What should I do? Should I call Nelly? Do you want me to? I mean should I –”

Abrielle cut him off. “Kyler. Please.” She said very calmly and then continued. “Just call Nelly, there’s no need to panic.”

Nelly was their midwife. Abrielle, being the overly cautious person she is, wanted to have a completely natural birth, and thought that a midwife would be the best option to allow her to do that. She had researched it thoroughly and finally found Nelly.

------

When Nelly arrived Kyler led her into the living room where Abrielle was sitting on the couch trying to relax.

“Hey Momma, how are we feeling?” Nelly smiled at Abrielle

“Oh, you know, feeling great. As great as you can feel when you’re having contractions every other minute.”

“They’re pretty close together then?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, maybe we should get you to your bed and see how close the little one is to joining us.” Nelly and Kyler helped Abrielle upstairs and into her bed, where she settled in to endure the next several hours of labor.

------

After what seemed like a lifetime to Abrielle but in reality was only six hours, it was time to start pushing.

“Alright Abrielle. Nice and slow now. Deep breath and… push.”

Abrielle did what she had practiced multiple times in her classes, but this time it was the real deal. This time all her hard work and effort would pay off, and soon she would be holding her beautiful baby in her arms.

“Push push push push!” Nelly said, encouraging Abrielle. “Keep pushing Abrielle you’re doing great!”

Kyler smiled and kissed Abrielle’s forehead. “You’re doing great honey, we’re almost there!”

It was nothing like in the movies Abrielle thought. Not at all. She wasn't screaming her head off, or yelling at Kyler blaming him for putting her through so much misery. It was quite the opposite of that. Sure the pain was terrible, but she was almost peaceful. Serene. She was focused and ready to bring this baby into the world.

(Author's note: Notice the picture of Abrielle holding Charlie in the background. I got so sad when I saw this.)

“Abrielle, reach down and feel your baby’s head.” Nelly guided Abrielle’s hand down to her baby, and together they guided it out.

Sure, it sounds creepy, but it was a beautiful thing. Abrielle and Kyler both started crying with joy.

“Congratulations you two! You have a beautiful baby girl.”

“We did it!” Abrielle said breathlessly as Nelly wrapped their child in a blanket and then handed her to Abrielle.

“Yes we did. But I never had a doubt that you couldn't!” Kyler beamed proudly at his wife and daughter.

“Hi sweetheart!” Abrielle cooed. “Hi there Adeline.”

“Adeline. That’s such a beautiful name.” Nelly smiled

“Adeline Margaret Gray. That’s what we've decided.” Kyler still had an enormously cheesy smile on his face.

“Well it’s a beautiful name for a beautiful baby. Alright, well if mom is feeling ok I’m just going to give you two sometime alone.” Nelly smiled at the small family and left the room.

“She’s perfect.” Kyler whispered sitting down on the bed next to Abrielle and Adeline.

“Yes. Yes she certainly is.” Abrielle smiled and kissed her little girl’s forehead.

------

That night as Abrielle and Kyler tucked in their little angel they said a silent prayer to God, thanking Him for giving them this miracle and begging Him to let them keep her. Kyler tried to convince Abrielle to come to bed, but he knew he was fighting a battle that was already lost. After all, he had moved a pullout couch into the nursery knowing Abrielle wouldn't leave the baby’s side once it was here.

“Abri, you sure you don’t want to try to get some rest?” Kyler whispered trying not to wake the baby.

“No Ky, I’m fine here.” Abrielle said settling down onto the sofa bed. “Plus,” she said patting the bed, “If I get tired I've got a bed right here.”

Kyler nodded his head knowing that there was no point to push it any further and laid down in the bed next to Abrielle. “If you’re staying here so am I. We’re in this together. Remember?”

“Yep.” Abrielle smiled. “Forever.”

“Forever.” Kyler echoed.
