Chapter Six: What Happened?
There's no recollection
Of the evil things I've done.
My head feels like I musta' had some fun.
What happened?
- Sublime, “What
Happened?”
------
“What the?” Abrielle sat up and stared around the room she
was in. Jenesis’s. “Why am I in her bed?” Abrielle thought out loud. “And what
the hell happened last night?” She got out of the bed and made her way down the
stairs, she stopped outside of her bedroom door with her hand on the doorknob.
Is that snoring? Is someone
in my room?! A bunch of thoughts raced through Abrielle’s mind as she
slowly opened the door. As she peeked her head around the corner she spotted a
strange man sprawled across her bed.
“Ohmygod,” Abrielle gasped and ran down the stairs to the
living room. She spotted Jenesis lying on the couch.
“Jen!” Abrielle squeaked and ran over to her, “Wha – what
happened last night? That guy. My bed. Did I? Oh hell.”
Jenesis just shook her head and smiled at Abrielle. “Ah kid,
calm down. Nothing happened between you or that guy, whose name is Eric by the
way.”
“Oh thank God!” Abrielle sighed in relief. “Why was I in
your bed then?”
Jenesis laughed. “Well that’s a pretty strange story
actually.”
“First of all, Eric and I sort of, well, let’s just say we
hit it off at the club, so I brought him home. Once we walked through the door
you went from being all, ‘oh you two are sooooo cute’.
To, ‘Alright now, you two. No funny business tonight. Eric
you can sleep in my room, and Jenesis, you will be sleeping with me in your
bed. I’m keeping an eye on you'!
And I came down here not too long ago because you kick and
scratch in your sleep. It’s really unpleasant, just saying.”
“Uh, sorry?”
Abrielle didn’t know what to say. She was never the type of
girl to get so wasted she couldn’t remember the night before, but she was now
realizing that her break up with Jadrien was harder on her than she had first
thought. “I’m going to go shower.”
“Have fun, go easy on the tattoo.”
Abrielle stopped short and whipped back around to face
Jenesis. “Come again? A tattoo?”
Jenesis laughed again, “Oh Jeeze! You don’t remember that
either! Ha! God that’s rich! You, my lady, never fail to entertain me.”
“Jenesis! This is not funny! A tattoo? Really? Why in the
world would you let me get a tattoo? A tattoo while I’m wasted, oh come on,
that’s so cliché!”
Abrielle stormed off while Jenesis continued to laugh
hysterically at her roommate’s misfortunes.
------
Later that afternoon while Abrielle was sitting by herself
at the kitchen island eating a bowl of cereal (Jenesis had gone with Eric to
the beach for a little date), she got a call from Kyler.
“Hey Ky, what’s up?”
“Oh you know, wedding stuff. I was just calling to see if
you’d like to maybe go out to lunch? We could grab a bite to eat at the diner.
I just have a question to ask you.”
“Yeah, that’ll work. What time should I be there?”
There was a momentary pause from Kyler, followed by, “What’s
wrong Abri?”
Abrielle was shocked that Kyler had been able to pick up sadness
in her voice. “Yeah, I’m fine.” She paused and then added, “I broke up with
Jadrien last night, and then, just like the idiot I am, I went out and got completely
shitfaced… it was terrible Ky. I’m so pathetic!”
She sighed and listened to the silence on the other end.
It seemed like forever before Kyler said anything, and when
he did break the silence it was with him laughing. “Ha! God Abri. I’m so proud
of you! You dumped the douche bag AND got
wasted?! That’a girl!”
“Kyler, you are completely insane.” Abrielle laughed.
“Yeah, yeah. Meet me at the diner in fifteen ‘kay?”
“Yep, see you then.” Abrielle clicked the end button and
smiled to herself. Kyler could always lift her spirits. He was always there for
her, no matter what. She felt something strange pull at her heart, and was
confused about why she was feeling this way about Kyler. He was her best friend, and falling for your best
friend never ends well…
------
Kyler spotted Abrielle the second she stepped out of her
car. “Hey, Abri. Over here!” He waved like a complete lunatic and Abrielle just
chuckled. That’s Kyler for you.
“Hey bud.” Abrielle said hugging him. They held on a moment
longer than usual, and normally Abrielle wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but
because of the way she was feeling earlier she couldn’t help but notice.
“Alright kid,” Kyler said and pointed to the chair at the
table they were standing by. “Have a seat. I have a pretty big question to ask
you.”
“Uh… Alriiiight.” Abrielle sat down hesitantly. “What is
it?”
“Well, Maylee thought it would be best if I asked you
personally instead of her asking, since you two still don’t really know each
other – which you should since you are my best friend and she is my soon-to-be
wife!” Kyler paused for dramatic effect and smiled at Abrielle.
“Ky, come ON!”
“Alright alright! So, Abrielle Jolene Ainsley, would you do
me the immense favor of being the maid of honor in mine and Maylee’s wedding?”
Kyler folded his hands and gave Abrielle a pleading look. “Oh pretty pretty
please!” He smiled sweetly and waited for her response.
“Wow, Ky. I don’t even know what to say! Of course! Yes, of
course I will!”
“Gahh! Thank you so much Abri! You’re an amazing best
friend.” Kyler pulled Abrielle to her feet and gave her another hug.
That same feeling Abrielle was having earlier pushed its way
into her mind. She felt so honored that Kyler and Maylee would ask her to be
the maid of honor, but the thought of their wedding made her extremely sad. What is happening to me? I should be
overjoyed for my best friend!
“Well, it’s just going to be a small wedding, both of our parents will be there, Maylee’s
brother will be there, along with her good friend Jaielle and one of my
childhood friends, you remember Michael right?”
He didn’t pause long enough for her to answer before he
continued to ramble on about the wedding that was only a few weeks away. “Bring
a date if you’d like, and let Jenesis know that she can bring a date as well.
Thanks again so much Abe. Maylee will call you sometime this week and set up a
date to get your dress fitted. Sound good?”
It was a lot to take in but Abrielle simply nodded and smiled.
“Well I gotta run, thanks for meeting me.” He kissed her on
the cheek and headed towards his car.
“Anytime, Ky.” She called after him. He turned his head to
smile at her, throwing her a wave as he got into his car.
As he drove away Abrielle’s smile faded. She couldn’t help
but feel as though in a few weeks time she would be losing one of the most
important things in her life.
